Just the beginning

davinciinstitute.com

I've just started reading this book. In the beginning of the book it talks about the main character Winston Smith and he's in this staircase and he see's this picture with an eye with a caption saying "Big Brother is Watching You."  Winston has his back turned toward the picture, because he knows someones watching. No matter where you are in your house, at work, friends house, or even out in the street someone is always watching. To me that would just freak me out and would make me not want to say anything to anyone. I haven't read much of the book, but it's interesting so far. It's a the type of book where it just starts right on in on what it's about.

  1. The idea of someone always watching you is creepy. But how is Big Brother able to watch the people all the time? I'm curious as to how Orwell sees this as something able to be done.

Teacher moment: try to find a hyperlink where your reader can learn something more. Big brother link didn't make much sense to me.

  2. Spooky! I really wouldn't like other men who are incredibly bored with their lives and have no other job listen to my private topics. But when Orwell wrote 1984 in 1949, he portrayed his vision of a probable future. (At that time, it was all about cleanliness and flying cars and no socialism.)Granted 1984 is a novel, but compare the technologly in 1984 to some of today's technologies. Excuse me for sounding paranoid but they have the potential to see what we are doing.
Whoops, I better stop here before I ruin it for you.

  3. Creepy, I didn't read this when it was an option for underclassmen english. But I've heard enough of this dystopia to scare the tar outta me! I hate the idea of having people watching me!

  4. I don't know but if I don't like the book, I ain't going to read it and that seems to be the same case with you. ;) This book sounds okay but I think that you need to get more into and take more time to read it and then maybe you would like it and thinks its more interesting. Other than that, I really love the picture you have with this its cute and then the color is no surprise!

  5. That would suck to have someone watching over you all the time. You would never be able to be alone because they are their watching you and that would suck.

  6. I believe the book your reading is 1984. I am not quite sure. The fact that he knows someone is always watching you would creep me out tremedously. I would not be able to understand why they would watch at all times. I am glad our society today is not like this. Next time it would be great to know the book as well to maybe understand better.
